Senpan Maekawa (1888–1960) was an important Japanese printmaker. Born in Kyoto, Maekawa was known as a manga artist and woodblock printer who developed an original style with clean engravings and lively, humorous compositions. Maekawa is also credited with playing a role in the early period of Japanese animation. This exhibition is the first major retrospective for Maekawa in 44 years. It features some 350 works, mainly from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Foundation collection, offering a comprehensive look at Maekawa’s printmaking. Enjoy this artist’s warm gaze on the lives of everyday people and places.
